My Freshman Year 1st Semester Experience

by - Tuesday, January 26, 2016

Some of my favorite videos to watch and blog posts to read are about everyone's freshman year experience after their first semester of college. Fall 2015 was my first semester of college. I attend the University of Southern California which is about 5 hours from my home in norcal. For 17 years, I lived in my house in Northern California and moving in to college was my first move ever. Scary, thrilling, nerve-wracking, and exciting were emotions that overwhelmed me my first week. I rushed, declared my major, took 17 units, went to football games, and lived in the on campus dorms. I had the time of my life my first semester and I can not believe it is already over.

To Rush or Not to Rush

Many freshman know whether to rush or not rush before they start their college experience. Personally, I saw legally blonde in the 5th grade and knew from that moment on that I had to be in a sorority. I always saw sororities with a positive outlook, a place to make a ton of friends, serve the community through philanthropy, and to have a home on campus. I did not realize the general public doesn't share my same views until I was in high school and talked to some people at other high schools. My high school was private and all girls, and lots of the girls rushed in sororities their freshman year of college. Coming from an all girls high school, it was natural to search for some familiarity and seek comfort in a group of girls. I always saw sororities in a positive light and believe they are extremely positive. Without my sorority, I would have not been as successful my first semester as I was. I had the opportunity to meet so many other girls including my big who gave me tons of helpful advice and helped me transition into college life. I would 100% recommend rushing. Even if you find that sorority life isn't for you, I met tons of girls during rushing that I am still friends with today. You can always decide at any point that you don't want to be in a sorority and it is a valuable experience. I am a member of Gamma Phi Beta and I couldn't be happier. Below is a picture of my amazing big and I.

Classes, Classes, And More Classes

In high school, I went to 4 classes or 3 classes switching everyday, going into college I had no idea what classes would be like. Last semester I had math everyday, chemistry 3 days a week, my GE in the humanities twice a week, engineering 101 twice a week, and engineering 102 once a week. I loved being able to schedule my classes to have them after 10 and 11am. Unfortunately next semester I'm going to have 9 ams everyday. My high school self would have killed for 9 ams. If we had a late start day, it was celebrated and that would mean we started at 9:10. With college classes there is so much more freedom. You can take classes at 8 am or at 7 pm. You can have class 5 days a week or 2. My high school was a difficult college preparatory all girls school. It completely over prepared me for college. I have found college to be way easier than my high school was. There is an increase in studying and longer papers/projects, but in general less work. I had some reading every week for my GE but other than that I only had math homework. Personally, I have found the transition from high school work to college work way easier.

Dorm Life

Coming to college as an only child was extremely intimidating. I had never had a roommate let alone lived with 28 other girls on one floor. The first time I have ever had to share a bathroom has been in college.  To say my dorm is small is an understatement. My dorm is the size of a shoebox. There is just enough room for 2 beds, 2 (half) closets, 2 desks, a trash can, a recycling can, and a mini fridge. I love living in a dorm. Having 27 friends around is so cool. You are constantly socializing. In college, you really need to learn how to take the time for yourself. Even if it's 5 minutes of blasting your music in the communal shower and singing as loud as you can it's super beneficial. If you guys want a dorm tour, I am so down to post one, just leave a comment below(:.
